‘Suburbia’ is an ongoing project which features communal spaces within residential social housing. The images aim to display the ways in which residents use these spaces, and transform them into social norms.
While shooting, Daniel noticed several washing lines put up in communal spaces which he found representative of those living in social housing, as these residents are often pushed out by wider society and similarly ‘left to hang’. Washing lines soon became a recurring theme throughout this project; Daniel focuses on the solitude of items on these washing lines that are symbolic of the often secluded position of social housing within society and surrounding affluent areas. By contrast, images showing the narrowness of the garden and deteriorating fences represent the gradual erosion of social housing due to means such as privatisation.
